There is no denying that NYSS is the baby of the government, thus it is very much committed to ensuring its success. The huge investments on the scheme by government speak volumes about this fact. Government takes full responsibility of feeding, clothing and providing training materials for Corps Members during the six week orientation programme. Similarly, apart from paying the skills training tuition fees, D200 stipends (Cash) is given to each Corps Member every month, during the two year service period. From the above, it is clear that the financial responsibility is colossal for government alone to shoulder.
In view of the above, the NYSS also engages in some income generating and cost –saving activities in order to complement government’s efforts in this quest. These activities include:
1. Tailoring
2. Accommodation and Catering
3. Farming in the following areas
• Mango fruit production
• Banana “ “
• Lime “ “
• Cashew “ “
• Sheep and Goats fattening
• Poultry keeping
• Bee keeping
• Horticultural activities
• Rice production
These activities are designed to be part of the general training programme while generating additional income to supplement/complement the annual subvention provided by government.
• Tailoring: This was established in 1996 to provide hands-on training for Corps Members who opt for sewing and dressmaking as a career. It is also operated as a business venture making profits for saving costs to the scheme. It sews all uniforms for Corps Members starting with the members of the fourth batch; there by saving the scheme a considerable amount of money, which would otherwise have been paid to private commercial tailors. Some qualified graduands are also employed to sew for the public on a commercial basis.
• Accommodation and Catering Service: This provides board and lodging during the orientation exercise but it is made available to the public at a competitive rate. As a result students and youth organisations constitute the largest number of guests who patronize the camp facilities. Revenue realised from these services is used directly for the maintenance of the facilities.
• Farming: NYSS has a rice farm at Sapu in CRR and a substantial Orchard at Nyaniberi in Western Region. These two farm settings serve as the field laboratories for Corps Members who wish to undergo training in agriculture.
The horticultural farm at Nyaniberi produces both fruits and vegetables. It also accommodates poultry and small ruminants (sheep and goats) as well as bee keeping. The main fruits produced are Bananas, Cashew, Limes and mangos. Income from these produce can be quite substantial in some seasons.
